Shipping containers

Containers are structures designed according to certain conditions, to ensure their ability to transport goods.

The containers which are available in the present day are mostly made of aluminium and steel. Aluminium dry containers have a slightly larger payload compared to steel dry containers. Steel dry containers have a slightly larger internal cube therefore the volume of the container is more in steel dry containers. Steel shipping containers are the most commonly used type of containers.

Containers are typically made of steel, because of their ability to carry heavy loads, withstand harsh climate conditions, in addition to, their strength and high durability. They incorporate trapezoidal metal sheets to form the walls and roof and profiles to form the ‘‘box’’ edges and the grid to support the wooden floor.

Shipping containers are containers, particularly used for sea transportation (trading goods, and food). On the surface of steel containers heavy duty coating is applied for the optimal strength and corrosion resistance.

In the market, there are shipping containers with several external dimensions. The most common ones have lengths with 6.0, 9.0, and 12.0 m and heights with 2.4, 2.55, and 2.7 m. The width is usually 2.4 m. For housing buildings, the most commonly used containers have 6.0 and 12.0 m long and 2.7 m high because it provides a bigger ceiling height.

In 1956, the first container was made, and the demand for their mass production has been increased.

Depending on the use of the container, shipping containers are designed and manufactured to cope with a long and arduous life moving goods around the world, accordingly they are very sturdy and secure.

The typical lifespan of a container in shipping service is 10-12 years, once it comes out of shipping services, it could be sold for other uses i.e. storage or housing purposes, which surpass its lifespan by 10 +years.

Aerosol container

To produce an aerosol container that was light and relatively inexpensive tin-plated steel was used for aerosol containers. The container also may be constructed of aluminum or coated aluminium (to prevent interaction with the product).

Other materials have been employed including glass, plastic-coated glass and polycarbonate. The tin-plate aerosol can is a 3-piece can with atop a bottom and the body all seamed together.

To keep all the particles squashed together and inside the small container, it is necessary to push hard and to keep pushing hard. The particles still have all the energy they had before and so they move around lot and hit the sides of the container with a lot of force.
This hitting of the particles against the wall of the container means that there is a pressure from the container pushing outwards all the time.

Mechanical properties of metal container

Metal containers offer the advantage of sufficient strength and robustness to permit easy handling, filling and processing, storage and distribution and without damage. Metal containers also impermeability to mass transfer and to light, good thermal conductivity and resistance to relatively high temperature.

The main metals used in packaging are mild steel sheet, tinplate, terne plate, galvanized mild steel sheet, stainless steel, aluminum alloys and aluminium.

Axial strength
Resistance to buckling of can from top load. Axial strength is independent of the gauge of sheet metal and temper within the range of loads that would be normally applied.

Panelling resistance
Resistance to paneling is a function of gauge and strength of the side wall. It is resistance of the panel to external pressure and/or in-can vacuum. Panelling resistance is a function of sheet metal gauge and strength of side wall.

Peaking resistance
It is the resistance to internal pressure during the processing cycle. When the content is filled in the container, the gas in head space expands generating increasing pressure in can.

The advantages of metal containers

Metal packages are widely used in food and beverage market segment because of cost effectiveness, durability and protection of the content.

Metal packing provides adequate protection for food and cosmetic products. When used for the packaging of food, metal is often in competition not only with other materials but also with other preservation processes and systems, such as aseptically filled cartons, freezing and so on.

Metal container for food and beverage

The metal food can dates from Napoleonic wars, when French industrialist Nicolas Appert invented a food-preserving technique using metal containers sterilized at high temperature.

A metal container may range from simply a means of distributing a product to a vehicle with a very precise marketing and technical purpose.

Metal cans are now used extensively in both the food and the beverages industries where they compete with containers made of glass, plastic, cardboard or composites. Metal containers are widely used in food and beverage market segment because of cost effectiveness durability and protection of the content.

The packaging forms of metal containers are including: three piece cans, bottle closure, two-piece can, food trays, metal drum, and metal foils.

Three-piece tinplate containers were used for many years for the packaging of carbonated beverages.

The highly corrosive nature of carbonated soft drinks demanded complete protection of the metal container from the product by the use of one or more coating of an impermeable enamel system.

In the case of processed foods, it must ensure a safe pack, which will be no risk to public health, and be sufficiently strong to maintain its integrity. Metal cans for food must be resistant enough to compensate for the loss of internal pressure resulting from high-temperature sterilization.

Hermetically sealed container

The preservation of food safety and quality in packaged foods depends on hermetically sealed packages.

The term hermetic refers to a container that is sealed completely against the ingress of gases and vapors. The package can be considered as an air or liquid tight container.

Such a container, as long as it remains intact, will also impervious to bacteria, yeasts, molds and dirt from dust and other sources.

The most common hermetic containers are rigid metal cans and glass bottles, although faulty closures can make them non-hermetic. Canned food can be defend as thermally processed shelf-stable foods in hermetically sealed containers, regardless of the type of container (metal, plastic, paper, etc) or how the thermal process was delivered.

The quality of the seal can readily be ascertained by coating the ampoule with a leak-detection compound or detergent solution, then pacing it in a bell jar of vacuum desiccators and evacuating. Any leaks present will result in an easily seen stream of bubbles.
