Aseptic Packaging Advantages

Packaging assumes a vital role in almost every food manufacturing process. Aseptic packaging entails the separate sterilization of both the package and the product, bringing them together in an environment devoid of microorganisms, and securely sealing the package.

For liquid products, the process involves ultraheat treatment, followed by in-line food sterilization thermal processing, and subsequent packing within a sterilized container situated in the aseptic zone. Concurrently, the packaging machine molds the container and sterilizes the packing material, typically comprised of polyethylene, paperboard, and foil layers within an aseptic packaging system.

Sterilization of the packaging utilizes hydrogen peroxide, UV, and sterile hot air, with the system being purged by sterile air under overpressure. Aseptic packaging provides benefits such as preserving the optimal nutritional and sensory attributes of food, prolonging the shelf life of products through heightened sterility and quality, and reducing final product costs by necessitating less energy for storage and transportation.

This approach proves particularly effective in extending the shelf life of low acid foods. Leaders in the aseptic packaging market have incorporated features like easy-open and easy-pour in their cartons. Foil, as a packaging material, finds utility in snack bags or as part of laminated aseptic packaging.
